Phone company is gay? How?

Global gay marketing, gay advertising, lesbian and gay market research leaders. Gay Marketing 101 - The Updates.

This is one I saw last week that is still making me laugh. Though sometimes you really do wonder...

There is a group in the US with right wing political links that is trying to besmirch the reputations of the mainstream phone companies by alleging all sorts of crazy stuff about their activities and policies. Below is a link to recordings made during real telephone conversations with call centre workers representing a right wing group, whose main sales pitch is to criticise telephone companies like AT&T, MCI and Sprint.

An hilarious range of allegations is made against all these brands, including the (shock, horror!) allegation that some of them target the gay market through lesbian and gay advertising and other forms of gay marketing. These three recordings are so unbelievable that a US newspaper, the New York Sun wrote about it last month under the headline Hate Speech on the Other Line.

Gay and lesbian groups and gay marketing specialists see this group for what they are. Fringe. It would of course be only just seriously funny if the tactics employed by this particular right wing group were not so creepy.

Some of what they say is very, very misguided.

You can listen to these three recordings online now at the website of the guy who has recorded them. His name is Eugene Mirman and the recordings are available at his own website: here.

Here are the direct links through to the three MP3 file recordings for you, if you prefer to get straight to them here, here and here.

The right wing group were trying to use hate speech to get people to switch their telephone company.

Using anti gay market rhetoric is perhaps best seen as being part based on hate, and part based on commerce - in trying to get people to use homophobia as a reason to switch phone companies to generate profits for their employers.

Either way, gay marketing, and targeting the lesbian and gay market, is not something that will disappear, no matter how much these people wish it would. The gay market is not going away. And gay people and the brands that seek their business as customers are not 'evildoers'. What a strange world.

Have a nice weekend - and do listen to these, you'll leave the office smiling!

Cheers, Ian.
