With gay and lesbian TV now a reality in a growing number of countries including France and Belgium (Pink TV), Italy (Gay.TV), Canada (PrideVision, OUTtv) and with three US lesbian and gay TV stations - Logo, here!, and Q TV; the UK seems a very logical new gay media market for the expansion of gay and lesbian TV programming.

However it has now been announced that a well publicised push into gay and lesbian TV broadcasting by specialist lesbian and gay market TV channel, Faze TV, is not to launch in the UK market this month as previously announced by the group.

Faze TV placed full page advertising into UK gay and lesbian Pride month official publications during May and June this year announcing their start date as September 2005.

Out Now learned from sources some months ago that Rupert Murdoch's Sky TV network was yet to agree a funding deal with the channel.

Faze had by that time already announced that it would be carried as a lesbian and gay TV channel on the Sky Digital TV platform for the UK gay and lesbian market and would start gay and lesbian TV broadcasting on Sky from September 2005.

It would seem that... the developers behind the channel were in fact promoting a launch date for UK gay TV programming that was not at that stage certain, as Sky TV were yet to finalise the necessary arrangements.

To be honest, in our opinion, the attempts by Faze TV to provide a new media option for gay marketing, and reaching the UK lesbian and gay markets, whilst admirable, obviously cannot really be considered an exercise in good strategic gay marketing in the way it was implemented.

But we at Out Now are confident that the UK, as one of the most important markets in European lesbian and gay community marketing, will see at least one dedicated gay TV channel before too long.
