When the UK Pink Pound Conference on the gay consumer market was held back in June, companies seemed unready and largely unaware of the implications of the new laws enacted under the UK Equality Act 2006 which establishes the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, and which outlaws discrimination in the provision of goods and services in the UK, including on the grounds of sexuality.
A vote on the Equality Act enabling Regulations relating to Northern Ireland passed the House of Lords last night, and similar regulations are expected gain the force of law in England and Wales from April (they are already in force in Northern Ireland).
The impact of this is quite profound for gay consumers.
It is no longer allowed for organisations in the UK to refuse service or goods to consumers simply because they are gay.
That is an important change.
Out Now Diva and Gay Times gay market research reveals that 135,000 UK lesbians and gay men were refused goods and services in the UK during 2005 because they were perceived to be lesbian or gay.
This law should hopefully prevent that occuring.
It also means business must improve staff training to ensure that staff understand their legal obligations under these new Equality laws.
