On a night most often memorable for the length of the speeches and the overruns of the timing for the annual Academy Awards Oscars presentations in Hollywood, Ellen DeGeneres has continued her habit of breaking down barriers in her professional career.Nearly ten years after being the first major lead in a US sitcom to announce she is gay, both in real life and in character as Ellen Morgan on her TV show in the 1997 season, Ellen DeGeneres last night executed a highly polished job at reining in Hollywood's often over-inflated annual love-fest, The Academy Awards.
Ellen's role as host for the Oscar show marks yet another milestone on the road to lesbian and gay integration and true equality in society. When we get to be out, and make good on career promise and even get to laugh at ourselves along the way then you know things are really going places for lesbians and gay men. "If there weren't blacks, Jews or gays, there would be no Oscars," DeGeneres said, and, after a quick pause, added: "Or anyone named Oscar."
In her trademark white shoes and busting a few of the dance moves from her hit daytime TV talk show, DeGeneres was applauded by commentators for setting the 'tone' for the broadcast just right.
One of the really important things is probably the fact that it was Ellen 'the person' people were impressed by, and not the fact that she is a lesbian. That may sound odd, but ten years ago when Ellen came out as gay on the cover of Time magazine, her show's ratings struggled as media talk centred not on her performance abilities as a TV actor, but rather on her sexual orientation.
Fast forward ten years, and there is no denying the true star of last night's show was its host. And not her sexuality.
Things seem to have come a very long way since 1997.
