Omnicom is copping a lot of negative gay PR market place flak about being the head-agency responsible for one of the most anti-gay marketing strategies ever in the Snickers campaign broadcast during last week's Superbowl. It was disappointing then to read another Omnicom-owned gay PR sub-agency Outfront website comments about this Omnicom gay Super Bowl Snickers advertising that actually seems to be promoting homophobia and threatening physical gay violence against men suspected to be gay.
If you don't yet know why the gay community is disgusted with the content of these advertisements put out by another Omnicom agency, saying about two men kissing onscreen "that's not right", then just watch here some of the now removed online advertising from this anti gay PR Omnicom gay bashing campaign.
The people behind the Omnicom Outfront gay PR site are maybe trying to do an adequate gay PR job, but in Omnicom's own Outfront gay PR sub-agency online response to the Snickers gay Super Bowl advertisment controversy they manage to criticize the Snickers Omnicom gay PR campaign but at the same time fail to admit the fact that their own parent company, owner of a sister-agency to their own, are responsible for creating this very anti gay PR campaign -- quite possibly the most anti gay homophobic advertising for a well known consumer brand in years.
The Omnicom produced online alternate endings to the Snickers gay PR advertising even feature a man gay bashing another man with a wrench, and then a man slamming the hood of a car hard onto another man's head -- only because he tried to kiss him. Worst of all - this Omnicom created Snickers site then actually asked web visitors to choose the most "satisfying" ending out of all such violent and homophobic situations presented by their agency.
We know that gay PR for some agencies is often about just nothing more than their own PR spin, but trying to appear to be a moral gay PR marketing authority on this dreadful gay PR mistake, yet not admitting to their own ownership link with their own parent agency that owns the shop behind this very anti gay advertising seems to be a little less than completely upfront 'gay PR' by Omnicom's Outfront gay PR agency about themselves.
But there you go. "Good" corporate gay PR must mean different things to different companies we guess. Not the way we would conduct ourselves at Out Now Consulting.
I could not help but smile though at this Snickerphobic website - a funny way to end one of the worst gay PR weeks in many years.
In the meantime - Out Now is this week and next doing new media PR interviews in South Africa and the Netherlands about gay marketing and gay PR - and we will post these on this site for you soon.
There was also a good Sweden gay market PR assessment that Out Now was covered in two weeks ago - so we will post that for you here too.

OMG - I so agree!
I just went and read what the Outfront people said yesterday about that Snickers ad and they SO conveniently fail to note their common ownership with the creators of such a homophobic advertisement.
What complete hypocrites!!!!
Zane.
PS - I really like your site! X (and you look a bit cute in that picture of yourself!! "blush"!!!!)
Very true - they seem to be against the Snickers thing but now I know they are owned by the same company I am amazed they don't disclose that in their own blog.
They criticise the Super Bowl ad but don't tell us, the reader, that it is their own parent company behind the Snickers ad. Hypocrites!
Julia Webster.
so true - there is no hint that i could see where outfront in what we read and they wrote actually confess to sharing their ownership with the agency that made that gay bashing snickers ad
- but even worse they try and sound really above it all and tell snickers what they should have done?
v scary people over at omnicom outfront.
not to be trusted.
billy.
It is difficult for the Outfront guys i think they personally want to do gay PR but it must be so difficult trying to do it in the context of a big agency ownership.
The snickers controversy that Omnicom - their parent ownership agency is linked to - shows just the very real types of risks behind a big agency trying to say it can do niche gay pr effectively.
Will.
