OAKLAND: RETIREMENT CENTER FOR GAY SENIORS TO OPEN

The Bay Area Reporter, and other media are reporting on a retirement community in Oakland for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered seniors being touted as the first of its kind in the area which will begin pre-leasing units today.

Barbary Lane Senior Communities, named for Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City novels, consists of 46 independent living apartments in the former Lake Merritt Hotel.

"This is unique because it will be the first for-profit, market-rate housing for LGBT seniors in an urban area," said Jeffrey Dillon, executive director of Barbary Lane Senior Communities. There is a similar community in New Mexico, Dillon said, but it is more focused on resort living.

Having lived through years of societal discrimination, gay seniors are often afraid of discrimination to the point of going back into the closet, Dillon said. And like all seniors, they can face loneliness.

"Aging and isolation go hand in hand. As part of the LGBT community, it's even higher because you don't have the traditional infrastructure. A lot of people don't have children," Dillon said.

The new community will serve as a social gathering for people of all ages and sexual orientations, hosting public events, lunches and Sunday brunches, Dillon said. The idea has proved popular so far. "The phone is ringing off the hook," Dillon said.
