Sir Elton John celebrates his 60th birthday today, and is in New York with his 60th performance at Madison Square Garden tonight.

Last night Sir Elton held an amazing celebrity studded party in Manhattan, also in honour of his 60th birthday.

He is one of the most prominent out gay celebrities in the world and has enjoyed an amazing career spanning decades.

It was in the early 1990s that he left behind a previously destructive lifestyle of drug and alcohol abuse to become clean and sober, something he believes saved his life allowing him to be here to celebrate turning 60. He attributes that major life change to the impact of helping AIDS child Ryan White, leading Sir Elton to also establish his Elton John AIDS Foundation - an organization that has raised many millions of dollars in the fight against AIDS.

In the latest issue of New Statesman magazine he writes about the imperative of the ongoing fight for lesbian and gay rights globally.

"There has been substantial progress on gay rights in Britain, but we can't be complacent, not when homophobia still exists here and not when people around the world live in fear solely because of their sexuality. In some countries, my voice would have been drowned out - maybe even stamped out," says Sir Elton.

"For many, basic rights are still a matter of life and death."

Tonight's concert here in New York at Madison Square Garden is a most elegant and fitting occasion as it is both his 60th performance at the venue and it takes place today, his 60th birthday.



Love him or not, we cannot help but be very impressed by his immense PR impact during his 60 years.
