The latest issue of The Advocate magazine has an article that they say reveals the most popular places in the US market for lesbians and gays to live.At Out Now we are often asked the question: where do gays and lesbians live? To which we usually respond: "everywhere".
The Advocate media piece though makes some interesting observations.
In the past lesbians and gay men clustered into so called gay ghettos for social, safety and other reasons.
With increasing acceptance of lesbian and gay people, that need to do so is diminishing.
Here is an extract from the media release about The Advocate article.
The Advocate Publishes Its First-Ever List of Best Places to Live for Gays and Lesbians
NEW YORK CITY, March 13 -- The Advocate has unveiled a list of cities and towns in its first annual look at the 10 best places for gay and lesbian people to live in the United States.
Titled "Where We Live," the 12-page article looks outside all the traditional gay meccas to find the 10 best places for openly gay and lesbian families and singles-as well as emerging trends related to these locales.
"The Advocate welcomes you to this new American landscape" reads the headliner of this article. "As the country opens its arms to openly gay and lesbian people, the places we call home have grown beyond urban gay ghettos."
The Top Ten Places to Live chosen by The Advocate in alphabetical order are:
-- Columbus, Ohio
-- Dallas, Tex.
-- Ferndale, Mich.
-- Ithaca, N.Y.
-- Lexington, Ky.
-- Missoula, Mont.
-- Portland, Ore.
-- San Diego, Calif.
-- Santa Fe, N.Mex.
-- Tucson, Ariz.
"We continue to find that the lives of gay people in America are evolving in surprising ways," said Anne Stockwell, newly named Editor of The Advocate. "When the magazine was founded 40 years ago, we would never have dreamed that we would be reporting on the burgeoning gay scene in Lexington, Kentucky, or that gays and lesbians would be retiring to Santa Fe. This remarkable study is evidence of a sea change in our culture and of acceptance and visibility."
