To be gay at work is not always so easy.Last year, Out Now Diva and GT market research revealed that only half of UK lesbian and gay workers felt comfortable to be out at work.
It seems we can count the just resigned CEO of BP, Lord Browne, amongst the 49% of UK gays and lesbians who told Out Now they did not feel comfortable being out to everyone at work.
We think that figure is far too high and more needs to be done to allow lesbians and gay men to feel comfortable being out as gay in the workplace, from the CEO down.
Lord Browne's case, as with so many others' experience, is a fairly sad comment on the pressure so many lesbians and gay men at work experience when they feel compelled to keep their own gay or lesbian sexuality a secret in the workplace.
This effort often is diverted from other more productive aspects of work such as team building.
In Lord Browne's case, whom Channel 4 news (UK) described as a "colossus" of the business world, the need to conceal his gay relationship has led to his alleged perjuring of himself in a court case and his subsequent resignation from the petroleum and energy company, British Petroleum, known as BP.
In going to court to stop his Canadian lover, Jeff Chevalier, revealing details of their gay relationship to a UK news media outlet, Lord Browne allegedly lied in documents filed with court seeking an injunction to prevent news media publication about his gay lover.
It seems sad to us that for many lesbians and gay men, it is still not easy to be out as a gay men or a lesbian at work.
Things still need to improve for a lot of other gay and lesbian people, as well as for Lord Browne.
