We should all have the right to live with the same dignity, opportunity and safety. It shouldn't matter what anyone's sexual orientation is. - Cyndi Lauper.Lesbian and gay rights have increasingly been understood to be human rights and a necessary part of civil rights in many countries around the world.
That this is not yet true everywhere was sadly remembered by those who were attacked in Moscow at the second LGBT Pride March last weekend.
According to Deutsche Welle: "Dozens of Russian right-wing extremists converged on the group, shouting insults like "fags," "perverts" and "death to homosexuals," throwing eggs and punching and kicking gay demonstrators in front of riot police who intervened much later."
If ever proof was needed that gay rights are civil rights that was it.
Such is the logic behind a groundbreaking tour of music industry players in 15 cities across the US that hits the road next week.True Colors is the name of a concert tour that kicks off in one week and one day from now - on June 8 - in Las Vegas at the MGM Garden Arena at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, that city's premier entertainment arena, in the premier entertainment city in the US.
When I visited Las Vegas last month it was a very heartwarming sight to behold the big screens outside MGM Grand promoting the True Colors tour. These screens have been seen by hundreds of thousands of Vegas visitors in recent weeks and now the True Colors tour is ready to roll.
Conceived by Cyndi Lauper the True Colors tour owes its existence to a meeting Lauper had with Judy Shepard of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Seeing the work of the foundation along with the extremely important outreach offered by PFLAG - Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and the important lobbying work of the HRC - Human Rights Campaign, Lauper got together a bunch of her mates and decided to hit the road to raise funds for gay rights.
Including Margaret Cho, Erasure, The Dresden Dolls, The Misshapes and Gossip - True Colors organizers have just announced Rosie O'Donnell is to join the tour, adding even more gay PR and marketing "star" firepower to a celebrity-heavy tour.
Playing 15 cities across the US and Canada this Northern Hemisphere Summer, the True Colors tour is supported by Logo, Orbitz and Sirius Satellite radio, and winds up in Los Angeles at the Greek Theater on June 30.
If True Colors is coming to your neighborhood - go to enjoy the great music, and help support gay rights - all at the same time.
Now there's a real feelgood factor to start your Summer.
