Earlier in the year Gay Market News covered a feature story by Out magazine that called on actor Jodie Foster and journalist Anderson Cooper of CNN to come out of the closet as gay celebrities.

Respected author Armistead Maupin has called on Anderson Cooper to do so as Maupin has, for years, advocated a policy of expecting celebrities to come out as gay for the sake of many thousands of young gay and lesbian people that can then understand that how they are is no barrier to professional success and personal fulfilment.

Lily Tomlin, now out of the closet, was one whom Maupin thought should have come out as gay years earlier. Ellen DeGeneres has seen career highs since her decision ten years ago to come out as gay.

There is something in those arguments I guess but in Australia the gay community long ago tired of the old: "Is Ian Thorpe gay?" type of discussions - with a relaxed sense of 'live and let live', and respect for the decisions of others about coming out or not coming out as gay. The issue is not that it matters if they come out as gay, the issue is seen as 'who cares if they are?'

We are staying quite resolutely on the fence on this one, but thought you may be interested to see this short piece of video from CNN where Anderson Cooper on 360 seems to share an inside joke with Headline News anchor Erica Hill. We will let you watch to decide for yourself - is Anderson Cooper gay or not gay?



And does it really matter?

We suspect that straight or gay - people like Anderson Cooper for the quality of his journalism, not the nature of his sexual orientation.

Were he to be gay, and given all the speculation, with the respected position Anderson Cooper holds in popular culture, he might find - like Cynthia Nixon of 'Sex and The City' fame said to New York magazine after coming out as a gay celebrity: “If someone is chasing you, stop running. And then they’ll stop chasing you.”

You never know - just like Ellen, it could turn out to be a smart career move for more closeted gay celebrities to do just that.
