Last week we included a link to a video about Anderson Cooper seeming to be gay and to out himself on air.

The Anderson Cooper is he gay or not gay issue continues its momentum, as we first reported at Gay Market News in covering a feature story by Out magazine about media news journalist Anderson Cooper of CNN being in the closet as a gay celebrity.

We also made the point in our report on this last week that it is important to remember that 'outing' celebrities is not a universally accepted issue within the gay community, and that whether a gay media person like Anderson Cooper has a responsibility to come out as gay--as is argued by respected gay author Armistead Maupin--might perhaps be a matter for themselves alone.

This 'Is Anderson Cooper gay?' question is not a news media issue that has just arisen recently--there have been gay consumer market issues around stories about other media celebrities like this for decades.

For the current 'Is Anderson Cooper Gay?' news topic you could just add it to the long list such as 'Is Jodie Foster gay? (neither confirmed nor denied), 'Is Rosie O'Donnell Gay?' (yes, most absolutely), 'Is Elton John Gay?' (yep) and even all the way back to 'Was Liberace Gay?' (which would apparently be answerable in the affirmative).

Well, to try and shed more light and less heat on this whole issue, this short report from TV's The View by Barbara Walters and Rosie O'Donnell discusses this outing of gay celebrities topic quite nicely.

A consumer market interest in whether stars are gay is certainly not new, but it apparently remains news nonetheless.


Is celebrity a mere 'commodity' that the gay consumer market and the mainstream media consumer market has any right to consume in its voracious appetite for news and gossip in discussing people like Anderson Cooper and his sexuality? Or is it not a topic for the consumer market to consider?

The Barbara Walters piece includes interviews with Boy George and Ricky Martin and looks into whether or not gay celebrity means personalities like Anderson Cooper have a responsibility to come out as gay or not, and what responsibility the media should play in whether to report on things like Anderson Cooper and gay rumors or not.
