Ian Johnson, Out Now
July 1, 2007
Today would have been the 46th birthday of much loved Princess Diana. To mark the 10th anniversary of her death in Paris, her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, are hosting a Concert for Diana at London's Wembley Stadium.
The concert for Diana today includes work and performances by the English National Ballet, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Duran Duran, Sir Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Lily Allen, Joss Stone, The Feeling, Fergie, James Morrison, Nelly Furtado, Kanye West, Take That and Tom Jones. A unique program of entertainment to remember a unique princess at the concert for Diana.
It is important to remember that Princess Diana was a true friend to the global lesbian and gay community. Her actions, many seen but many done away from the cameras, were ones that made a large impact. There was worldwide media coverage - mainstream and gay media - of Princess Diana taking the hand of an AIDS patient in a hospital at a time when many were afraid of people with AIDS. The communications impact of such a gesture cannot be overstated - and she knew it.
In the words of Princess Diana: "HIV does not make people dangerous to know. So you can shake their hand, and give them a hug."'Gay' of course does not equal AIDS and HIV does not discriminate in who it afflicts. But at that time, people thought of AIDS as a gay disease. It is true that Princess Diana was often well aware of the communications she was sending and (usually) chose her media communications moment wisely.
As the world prepares to remember Princess Diana and her many good works we thought you would be interested in reading this communications 'time capsule' in gay community media coverage of Princess Diana written just after her death in 1997.
It is from the archives of GLAAD - Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation - and it reflects the tremendous debt of gratitude that gays and lesbians and the global gay community owes to Princess Diana.
Happy birthday Princess Diana. And thanks.
Media Honors Diana's Connection to Gay Community
September 05, 1997
In the wake of her tragic demise, a number of media outlets, including notably the Associated Press (AP) and a local television station in Portland, Oregon, have run illuminating stories about the connection between Princess Diana and the gay community due to her AIDS advocacy work. A September 2 AP story begins, "In the largely gay Castro district, many San Francisco residents spent part of their Labor Day honoring the princess who championed AIDS causes." It quotes several of the people who viewed an impromptu memorial to Princess Diana. "Many in the city's gay community praised Diana for caring for those with AIDS when many feared the disease," it says. "One Castro resident, who said her full name was Oshara, left some lilies and a copy of the Oakland Tribune. She said the princess' view of AIDS was refreshing. Oshara also said that she appreciated the love Diana showed for the gay community. She said she had heard that Diana had gay friends who often helped her escape from the paparazzi." During the morning news on September 2, KOIN-TV in Portland portrayed reactions from a wide array of Oregonians, including contestants at the La Femme Magnifique pageant, where judges chose "the most beautiful female impersonator in the world." The drag queens shared their thoughts about the loss of Diana and the reporter and anchorpeople treated them as any other "man on the street."

Thanks so much for this post.
It was indeed important to remember how much Diana did for the world - and people living with HIV and AIDS are so thankful for her life and her legacy.
An amazing person.
