New Statesman is a very well-written British magazine and we have covered them before at Gay Market News.
Their latest issue includes a cover story Gay Special Feature report, about the state of the lesbian and gay community in the UK and elsewhere in the world.
The Gay Special feature article covers the UK 40th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexual acts between consenting male adults, in 1967.
It is a most thought provoking read as it speaks to various commentators, from discussion of Peter Tatchell and his major role in the fight for gay equal rights to Julian Clary, and all stops in between.
London Mayor, Ken Livingstone discusses gay rights in the Capitol and his involvement in their evolution.
Journalist and former Conservative Party MP Matthew Parris has contributed a very interesting article on how much he prefers life in the UK as an out gay man today compared to 20 years ago.
Parris remarks: 'I like Britain better for the big So What? that has tipped the argument our way. "None of my business" - that most British of remarks - has always been our best ally; and for their refusal to be provoked or even bothered by what history will judge an astonishing leap, I think a little gratitude to the British people themselves is in order.'
On such an important anniversary we can strongly recommend the New Statesman Gay Special feature as excellent background reading.
