Earlier this month Gay Market News reported on the Fort Lauderdale gay tourism market damage done by remarks by the city's Mayor, Jim Naugle.

There are new developments to this unfolding gay tourism market story.

PlanetOut ran today a special gay tourism market "advertising supplement" to promote the Fort Lauderdale tourism market and encourage gay travelers to keep visiting this beautiful area renowned over some years as a leading-edge marketing specialist for gay tourism.

Now a Fort Lauderdale gay rights advocacy group - Fight Out Loud - is pointing out that Mayor Naugle has been saying various quite different things about whether the lesbian and gay tourism market should expect to feel welcome in Fort Lauderdale.

In an almost textbook example of poor public relations management and adding fuel to a gay PR problem, Mayor Naugle, is apparently keen to keep gay tourism market dollars flowing into the city's coffers but is not really that keen on many of the gay market members that visit his city.

According to an August 16, 2007 Fight Out Loud media release: Fight OUT Loud wonders which of these statements are true. The mayor seems to want to keep the gay dollars flowing into the economy, but still be able to say whatever bigoted thought comes to his mind. He can’t vote to increase spending to invite gays and lesbian to our city then blame them for problems that exist only in his imagination. He can’t say everyone is welcome and then use stereotypes and bigotry to demonize a segment of the population. Naugle can’t have it both ways. His actions and comments only further expose Naugle for the disingenuous bigot that he his.

As we said in our previous report on this issue, at Out Now we think that the current problems in Fort Lauderdale are a terrible shame.

The Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau has been amongst the leading edge gay tourism market Destination Marketing Organizations and it seems so unfair for them to see what has been excellent gay tourism market outreach up to this point being undone by poorly thought out comments by their city's Mayor.
