Gay Market News has covered before the various lists of Power Gays that happen such as the UK Independent Pink List of Power Gays and the US Out magazine Power Gays list.

There is some gay Anderson Cooper and gay Jodie Foster outing risks that are always inherent in the decisions that go into making up such lists, and this raises a conundrum for the organizers of the Australian 25 Power Gays list.

Do they include only out gay influentials or is the list a total and inclusive gay community assessment of lesbian and gay power brokers in the Australian gay community - including gay community members that may be influential but may not be out in public?

Sydney Star Observer has a long and respected history, and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2009. This gay community newspaper of record has previously not taken up the cause of 'outing' gay celebrities, as was done earlier this year by respected US gay community media product Out magazine in the US - which outed Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster as being non-out gay celebrities.

How will the new Australian power list handle the potential for their list - to be compiled jointly with gay community website SameSame.com.au - to see gay celebrities rise to be part of the gay community nominated list of the 'top 25' most influential gay and lesbian Australians?

It has obviously been decided by organisers that only those gay community power types that "have publicly acknowledged being gay or lesbian" will be included in the new Australian gay community voted list.

We refer to them as Power Gays, A-Gays and Community Leaders – but who are they and why do we look up to them?

(SameSame.com.au) co-founder Tim Duggan said the Same Same 25 – or SS25 – will become an annual hunt to help track the changing face of the community.

“We’re out to uncover the next generation of gay and lesbian role models,” he said, “and we’re asking the gay and lesbian community to come forward and nominate anyone in the country who they think should be a member of the Same Same 25.”

Sydney Star Observer Publishing Editor Scott Abrahams said he expected the list to be diverse and interesting.

“The 25 could work in any field – sport, politics, the arts or big business – but if their influence counts, then we want to know about it,” he said.

“We expect it to be a celebration of people who are proud of their sexuality and an opportunity to recognise those who make a difference.”

Nominees must be Australian citizens who have publicly acknowledged being gay or lesbian. Nominations close 12 September and the list decided by a panel of community judges. The final 25 will be announced at a cocktail party in October.
