The weekend Emmy Awards included meaningful media coverage related to gay communications.

The messages communicated by the mainstream media at the Emmys illustrated well the improved way that mainstream media now can (when it chooses to acts in a 'grown-up' manner) approach the issue of communication of images, and media portrayals of lesbians and gays.

There was a well deserved win by Sally Field for her role as Nora, mother in 'Brothers and Sisters' to an out and well-adjusted gay son.

We also saw a number of gay celebs on the celebrity walk--out with their partners.

Ellen DeGeneres walked the red carpet with longtime partner, Portia De Rossi.

Doogie MD child star, Neil Patrick Harris, now happily grown-up and out of the closet, walked in with his partner, David Burtka.

Harris last year when coming out as a gay celebrity told People magazine: "The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life.

"Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships.

"So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."

Touché Mr Harris.

The implications for gay and lesbian marketing communications are rapidly becoming clear.

Being out and gay in the world of entertainment and media communications, just like in the world of music, is no longer considered to be an automatic career-killer, like it once was.

That is a major change from the many years past, and it bodes well for lesbian and gay communications media celebs as well as the many young gays and lesbians that their stardom influences.

It is to be hoped that gay sports stars might one day soon increasingly feel able to follow suit, as well as various gay communications and media celebrities who do not yet feel safe to be out of the closet.

The power of positive role models for gays and lesbians growing up cannot be overstated, and it was really great to see the images of gay celebrities Ellen DeGeneres, Portia Di Rossi, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, all out and proud--each working in their media and communications roles, and being recognized for their professional careers.

Being gay or lesbian was a complete non-issue in this media coverage.

Sexuality was not the story. Rather this was entirely about these celebrities' career excellence--and the recognition of that excellence by their communications and entertainment industry peers.

Really great stuff.
