Australians are less than five weeks away from going to the polls in a general election.
Gay Market News has written previously about the current situation confronting gay and lesbian voters in Australia.
The choice between John Howard and Peter Costello on the conservative Liberal Party side compared to the Labor leadership team of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. Lesbian and gay issues seem to have been almost absent in the campaign to this point, despite the fact that with 6% of the Australian electorate assumed to be gay or lesbian, that accounts for almost one 1 million Australian voters are lesbian or gay.
Greens Party leader Bob Brown has been the most vocal leader in support of lesbian and gay rights. Brown himself happens to be gay, and came out of the closet as gay many years ago, but his own homosexuality has usually been, quite rightly, a non-issue in the Australian electorate. Even as an advocate for gay rights, Brown speaks in his key role as a party leader, not as a gay man.
I have written before about how Australians seem to be in favour -- even in the rural Australian bush, where I grew up in a country town called Glen Innes -- of a fair go for all Australians.
Gay and lesbian Australians should have the right to expect equal treatment under all Australian laws including inheritance, superannuation, pensions and health laws.
Civil partnerships and gay marriage have been embraced as equitable in various other democracies including Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Canada. But the chance for much needed law reform in Australia seems unlikely if the current John Howard - Peter Costello led Liberal Party is returned in the November 24 Australian General Elections.
One of the Australian electorates with a significant pink vote is Wentworth, but, even there, sitting Liberal member Malcolm Turnbull is unable to count on the very many gay votes up for grabs.
The best chance for Australia's gay and lesbian voters seems to be a win by the Kevin Rudd - Julia Gillard led Labor Party who have said lesbian and gay law reforms would take place under their government, in line with previous recommendations of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission.
Today's leaders debate between Kevin Rudd and John Howard made no mention at all about gay equality rights.
Now something not strictly about gay marketing, but certainly about the power of effective communications strategies, here is a pleasant digression on which to end the weekend.
No matter what the forthcoming Australian election brings, if you have ever wanted to better understand what makes us Australians the sometimes colourful characters some of us are, you need look no further than this video of previous Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke in a speech on trade unions, Kevin Rudd and John Howard that shows Bob Hawke is still a force extraordinaire as an after dinner speaker.
Enjoy the last of your weekend, and we will be back tomorrow with more on the latest gay marketing news.
