The Australian newspaper reports that the Australian Labor Party under Kevin Rudd is expected to move quickly to remove discrimination that currently exists against gays and lesbians in Australia.
The leader of the Greens Party in Australia, Bob Brown, has said Prime Minister John Howard is guilty of "homophobia".
“I think he panders to homophobia in our society because he thinks it’s been a vote winner and I think he’s wrong,” Senator Brown said.
“We’re way behind a whole raft of other countries. This is not a light matter, this is about people legally deprived, defrauded of their rights. It’s very, very wrong.”

A Labor government would make the removal of legal discrimination against gays and lesbians one of its first orders of business.
Opposition legal affairs spokesman Joe Ludwig yesterday accused the Howard Government of failing homosexuals by refusing to remove discrimination and allowing it to be passed on to their children.
His comments come after a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission report found that 58 federal laws denied same-sex couples and families basic financial and work-related entitlements that heterosexual couples and their families take for granted.
Cabinet has discussed the issue several times, but John Howard is understood to have put off the decision until after the election.
Senator Ludwig moved an amendment in the senate on the last day of the last sitting to allow the same-sex partners of judges to get their pensions should they die before them, citing the case of High Court judge Michael Kirby.
"It is long overdue. The Howard Government should have done it ages ago, quite frankly. I don't know why they have stalled on it," Senator Ludwig said. "It's not something that you capitalise on, it's just something we will do because we've had a longstanding commitment to it."
Labor would conduct an audit to find where discrimination lay in "legislation, guides, rule books" (and) would be identifying the areas of discrimination and preparing legislation to remove them.
