Veteran leader, conservative John Howard, has been Australia's second longest serving PM, and also now looks like becoming only the second ever serving Prime Minister to lose his own seat in a general election.
Saturday's Australian election saw John Howard beaten by incoming Kevin Rudd.
So what does this result mean for Australia's lesbian and gay communities? The sitting Liberal MP in Australia's 'gayest' electorate of Wentworth, Malcolm Turnbull, was returned, going against the trend against his leader John Howard.
Malcolm Turnbull, often seen as a rival to John Howard, had placed full page election advertisements into local Sydney lesbian and gay media urging gay and lesbian voters to return him to parliament as their local member.
In the short term, following the historic victory by Kevin Rudd's labor Party against John Howard's Liberals, there is expected to be removal of more than 50 pieces of discriminatory laws from the Australian statute books, laws that have been identified as directly being responsible for discrimination against Australia's almost one million lesbian and gay citizens.
The area of gay and lesbian Civil Unions, or lesbian and gay marriage, is another topic that waits to be considered by the incoming Labor government.
Kevin Rudd though has said that he is not in favor of gay marriage, so whether that still leaves the door open to Civil Partnerships, such as those in the UK, remains to be seen.
There was a strong 'me-too' element to Kevin Rudd's successful election winning campaign, and that may mean that as the new government takes power, there may be a broadening of the Labor Party's announced social agenda to more adequately address the concerns of lesbian and gay Australians who are hoping to one day achieve true legal and social equality.
Or not.
I have written before that Australia -- the home of the 'Fair Go' -- seems a natural place to lead the world on lesbian and gay equal rights, but sadly under John Howard this was never likely to be the case.
It remains to be seen how much progress the gay and lesbian community can expect to achieve under Kevin Rudd, but it is certainly a nice feeling to know that the obvious impossibility of progress under John Howard has now been consigned to the dustbin of history.
Interesting days lie ahead for the Australian lesbian and gay community.
