First, it's the fair thing to do. Lesbians and gay men have been meeting and falling in love for centuries. To deny them legal equality and equal social respect seems dated and highly inequitable.
Secondly it's good business. Lesbian and gay weddings and the market for gay honeymoons are now developing into a multi-billion dollar market in various gay markets around the world where lesbians and gay men are now legally able to tie the knot -- such as the United Kingdom, gay weddings in Canada, lesbian and gay marriage in Netherlands, Spain and Belgium, as well as other places including South Africa, civil partnerships in New Zealand and gay unions in Massachuesetts.
So it is encouraging to read gay market news from Australia that two jurisdictions -- the State of Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory -- are set to introduce some form of legal recognition for lesbian and gay relationships.
Details of each scheme are yet to be disclosed, but it seems likely that initially the ACT laws will be more akin to a UK gay civil partnerships system.
New Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd beat John Howard two weeks ago in federal elections and he has said that while he is not in favor of gay marriage he is in favour of a uniform system of legal gay recognition for lesbian and gay relationships across Australia.
Rudd also says he will not intervene against the new ACT laws as his predecessor John Howard had.
Since laws relating to marriage (and presumably civil partnerships) are the responsibility of the provincial State governments, Rudd's statement on uniformity in conjunction with current move by the ACT to introduce Civil Partnerships in the Australian Capital Territory seem likely to lead to favorable developments for Australia's 1 million lesbians and gay men.
Interestingly the new opposition leader in Australia, Dr Brendan Nelson, has said he also supports the removal of legal discrimination against the Australian gay and lesbian community.
That is all not just good news for lesbians and gay men, and good for the marketing of gay weddings and gay honeymoons -- it is simply the right thing to do.
