During the election campaign Ms. Wong was one of the star media performers for the then oppostion leader Kevin Rudd. She is clearly both intelligent and articulate and, as an out member of Australia's lesbian and gay community, she is also a landmark government Minister for the lesbian and gay communities.
Her election has created a deal of media interest around the fact that Ms. Wong is an out gay woman, and is now a government Minister.
Even conservative commentators, like Glenn Milne of Rupert Murdoch's News Limited media empire describes Penny Wong as "a template of Australia's multicultural future. She will also be the first openly gay Minister in Australian politics."
