January 2008 sees the start of the long slow race for the White House in the US.
New Hampshire is a place that looms large this week with the various US Republican and Democratic candidates for US president vying for votes in New Hampshire primaries to see who will get to attend the US Presidential inauguration one year from now.
But despite the sometimes unseemly battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, one vote is already concluded.
The state of New Hampshire this month becomes yet another legal jurisdiction to recognize the equality and rights of gay and lesbian citizens with the advent of gay civil unions.
This is likely to see a continuing expansion in the value of the global gay and lesbian weddings and honeymoons markets - markets which did not even exist just a decade ago.
More important than the increasing benefits to marketers though, what matters most is that this is a great time for gays and lesbians in relationships that want to take the formal step of a commitment by way of a legal union.
Gays and lesbians have been falling in love for centuries. Now it's nice to see that the law is finally catching up.
This is an extract from the Canadian Press reporting on the new gay civil unions laws in New Hampshire:
The new law plants another rainbow-coloured flag in New England, which has grown increasingly gay-friendly since neighbouring Vermont became the first state to legalize civil unions in 2000. It has been a quick reversal for New Hampshire, where as recently as 2004 legislators reacted to Massachusetts' gay marriage law by passing a ban on recognizing those unions here.
The new law will make civil unions the equivalent of marriage in all respects but name.
Beginning in 2008, five of six New England states will provide some form of legal recognition to same-sex couples: marriage in Massachusetts; civil unions in Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut; domestic partnerships in Maine. Rhode Island does not allow same-sex marriages, but is among the few states that recognize ones performed in Massachusetts.
As ceremonies for gay couples go mainstream in New Hampshire, some innkeepers, hotel managers and tourism marketers are working to get some of the expected upswing in business.
"I think it can turn into another niche market for lodging properties and all of our wedding folks who provide services: photographers, florists, bakers, sleigh rides, the whole gamut," said Janice Crawford, executive director of the chamber of commerce in the Mount Washington Valley - a tourism-rich swath of ski resorts, retail outlets and small amusement parks in northern New Hampshire.
