TOPICS: Gay and lesbian rights. Gay equality. Homophobia, IDAHO - International Day Against Homophobia. Canada. New Canadian market research. May 17, Brussels, Belgium, Gay Pride. 17 May is the International Day Against Homophobia.May 17 is a day of significance in the gay and lesbian communities of the world.
It was on May 17, 1990 that homosexuality was officially removed from the register of disorders by the World Health Organization.
In recognition of this important moment, May 17 is now the International Day Against Homophobia -- also known as IDAHO for short.
On May 17, 2004 the State of Massachusetts became the first US state to legalize gay and lesbian equality to enter into legal marriage. Just this week, Gay Market News reported that it seems likely that California is about to introduce gay marriage laws of its own.
This day -- May 17, 2008 -- is also the major annual celebration of gay and lesbian pride in Belgium with Brussels Belgian Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade set to make its way through the streets of the City Centre from 2.00pm onwards. One of many such celebrations of gay and lesbian community culture set to take over the streets of Europe and the Americas during the northern hemisphere's coming summer.
Today, interesting new research from Canada was released, showing most Canadians (77%) understand that being gay or lesbian is not an illness.
Seven out of ten respondents (70%) say they are personally comfortable with the concept of homosexuality.Personally, I find those figures worryingly low -- implying as they do that almost one in four respondents presumably did think being gay is an illness. And three out of ten were not personally comfortable with gay and lesbian people.
Interestingly 79 % of those surveyed believe that healthcare professionals and workers should have training on gay and lesbian issues. The reality however is apparently quite different: few professionals and workers in the healthcare field receive training on such issues in Canada.
As we enter May 17, this International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) - it is worth reflecting on the progress that gays and lesbians have made these past decades around the world, and hope for the ongoing continuation of the move towards true equal rights for all people, irrespective of race, age, gender, sexuality and religious beliefs.
In short -- a hope for true equality of rights for all people.
